The Second Law of Health – Drink

The year of 2007 was a very interesting weather year in Utah.  We were about one month ahead of the normal weather pattern.  The snow pack melted a month ahead of normal, the heat of July was here in June, and the fire tankers were flying overhead sooner than normal.  With all that heat it was very important to make sure we were drinking enough water.

I recommend you drink one-half your body weight in ounces of water each day.  That means if you weigh 160 lbs. you would drink 80 ounces per day.  Remember you are sweating much more and losing much more fluid in the summer than you do in the colder months.  You are also losing more minerals in your sweat.  With the loss of minerals, heat stroke is much more likely.  Dehydration can also occur during illness where vomiting, diarrhea and fever are present.

Our bodies derive minerals from fruit and vegetables, mostly from green leafy vegetables, so eat lots of salads.  Another source of minerals is from supplementation.  BioNativus is a company that harvests wonderful minerals from the Great Salt Lake.  This awesome body of water holds many keys to health.  The Great Salt Lake receives its water from 35,000 square miles of the most mineral rich dense land in the world.  All 72 minerals and noble gasses are found in this water.  What’s interesting is that these minerals are highly electrically charged due to being hit by lightening from the electrical storms of the summer.  This charge helps with the absorption of the minerals into your cells.

Don’t dry up and blow away during the summer and dehydrate in the winter with the heater on!!  Stay well hydrated and add minerals to your water.  The minerals come in a plain liquid concentrate, or they can be added to the water with a tasty flavored concentrated drink mix.

The Lymphatic System

The Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system is one of the most important systems in the body.  It supports life by bringing nutrients to the cells and removing toxins and transporting them back to the liver for processing.

The lymphatic system has three major functions:

1)  Transport nutrients for cell use such as proteins, carbohydrates, and fats.
2)  Fight infections via killer cells such as killer T-Cells and Macrophage.
3)  Remove waste from cells and transport it back to the liver for detoxification.

The following example helps to illustrate the lymphatic system.  A freeway represents a major artery and blood flow, the off ramps represent a transition from the blood to the lymphatic system, and the city streets represent the lymph system.   As blood passes along the freeway or arteries, there is a 10% outflow of fluid from the circulatory system into the lymphatic system via the off ramps.  Within this fluid are delivery trucks that carry nutrients to the houses in the city which represent cells.  The houses use the nutrients and the waste is placed into dumpsters.  Garbage trucks come and pick up the waste and take it back to the burn plant or the liver.  Sometimes when the garbage trucks try to get back on the freeway, there are accidents on the on-ramp and the garbage trucks are not able to re-enter the freeway.  This causes backing up of fluid into the city or edema in the body.

Treatment for the Lymphatic System

1)    Determine the cause of excess toxins such as from leaky gut, or layers of infection.
2)    Support the body with supplementation to repair the organs and fight the infections.
3)    Help the body drain the excess fluid through supplementation and detoxification therapies.
4)    Make lifestyle changes to limit toxic exposure through the use of organic produce and free-range meats, use of filtered air and water and choosing natural or organic personal care products and household cleaners.

The First Law of Health – Eat

Commentary by Dr. Troy Giles:

Are you hungry for food and the life it brings?  I love food and the joy it brings, especially during the summer months with all of the family parties and social events.  Sometimes I lay there with my stomach so full I can hardly move or roll over.  That’s the problem!!  If I can’t move, how can I exercise?  Exercise?!?..?!  I think I’ll just lie here a little longer and have another piece of blueberry cream cheese pie.  Does this sound familiar?  It does to me some days.

We can attend all of the wonderful parties and enjoy all of the foods, just don’t eat until you are stuffed.  When we eat to excess, the washing machine effect begins in our stomachs.  You know, when you overload your washing machine and the soap sits on top of the clothes and doesn’t mix in with the water?  This is what happens when we overload our stomachs.  The digestive enzymes don’t mix well with the food, and improper digestion occurs.

Here are some helpful hints when eating:

1)    Eat proteins such as meats with vegetables.  Vegetables are a neutral food and can be eaten with both high starch and high proteins.
2)    Eat high starch foods such as bread and rice with vegetables.  Again, vegetables can be digested well with either starch or protein.
3)    Eat fruits alone as a meal or between meals as a snack.  Fruits are digested quickly and if you place them in the same meal with proteins, the fruit will ferment since protein takes longer to digest.
4)    Eat a diet consisting of 50% vegetables, 20% fruits, 20% proteins, and 10% fats.  Remember to eat fruit away from a full meal.
5)    Water is best sipped during a meal rather than drinking a lot of water.  If you drink a lot of water with the meal, the digestive enzymes are diluted which can lead to ineffective digestion.
6)    Eat dessert first as life is too short!!!  No, eat dessert, but just a little and later on after the meal.  You can add almonds or nuts, to slow down the “jet fuel” effect of the sugar.  Make desserts that involve better choices for the sweetener.

Follow these ideas, and you will have a much better digestion, and you will still be able to eat and have fun at those family parties.  Here’s to your health!

Sexual Dysfunction and Low Libido

Sexual Dysfunction and Low Libido

Sexual dysfunction and low libido are very common problems in today’s society.  Our lifestyle is so fast, compact, and stress filled, that many of us burn out and have overall low endocrine function.  The endocrine system is the hormonal system that controls our pituitary, thyroid, adrenals, ovaries, testicles and the hormones each one of these glands produce.

Possible problems:
Stress – Most people are under so much stress that their adrenal glands burn out and they experience a loss of adrenalin which is the hormone that helps you get up and go.  Adrenalin is known as the stress hormone and when there is too much perceived stress, the adrenal gland can not keep up with the demand, resulting in a noticeable increase in fatigue.  As the adrenal gland burns out the thyroid will try to handle the stress by producing more thyroid hormone and increasing the metabolism.  The thyroid ultimately will also fatigue, dropping the metabolism and the person begins to gain weight and feel very sluggish.  Interestingly, at least 90% of the population in the United States has low thyroid function as demonstrated by a low basal temperature test.  This is a simple test that you will do at home over a period of a few weeks.
Estrogen Imbalance – Low sex hormone production and balance is another major factor in sexual dysfunction.  Both men and women are susceptible to the hormonal fluctuations of their normal cycles.  This fluctuation is may be affected by xenoestrogens or estrogens found in chicken, beef, plastics and many other man-made substances.  These estrogens effect the female cycle by causing too much estrogen at the end of the cycle which leads to PMS symptoms.  Too much estrogen in the male may result in more female-typical characteristics as well as a decreased sex drive.
Emotional Factors – Sexual intimacy is very much an emotional interaction.  An emotional connection is a must for a healthy relationship to exist.  Because males and females are different in their perception of an emotional relationship, the meaning of an emotional connection must be discussed and understood in order for each person to have their needs met.  Without effective communication and understanding, sexual dysfunction may result.
Treatment – Correcting the endocrine dysfunction is vital to treating sexual dysfunction and low libido.  In order to implement an effective treatment protocol you must:

1)    Perform an analysis of the endocrine system and provide adequate support for each gland that exhibits diminished functionality.  We offer Adrenix, Thyroiden, Pituitin, Fem-Affirm, and Man-Affirm which are natural, herbal supplements that help to rebuild these glands.
2)    Decrease the perceived stress by making decisions that will diminish the stress in your life.
3)    Support the adrenal gland (or stress gland) with Adrenix.
4)    Eat only free-range chicken, beef and other animal products, rather than meat grown in a feed lot, to reduce excessive amounts of added hormones in the diet.
5)    Decrease relationship stress through education such as books, securing the services of a relationship coach, attending seminars, and discussing what each party in the relationship wants with regards to emotional and sexual intimacy.  Addressing all of these areas will help to strengthen your relationship with your partner.

Kidney and Urinary Function

Kidney and Urinary Function

Proper kidney and urinary function are vital to a healthy functioning system.  The kidneys are one of the major filters of the body and, along with the liver and spleen, filter the blood and remove toxins.  The kidneys are also responsible for maintaining normal electrolyte levels and contribute in the control of blood pressure.

Factors in Kidney and Urinary Dysfunction:

Dehydration – One of the main contributing factors to kidney dysfunction is dehydration.  Many of us do not consume enough water each day.  We are very busy and forget to drink enough water.  We should drink one-half our body weight in ounces of water each day.  This means if you weigh 160 lbs, you should consume 80 ounces per day of water.  Water is the cleanser and medium for movement of particles in the body.  If we do not have enough water, the fluids become thick, slowing the movement of toxins out of the body which leads to toxicity.

Acidity – Eating a diet too high in proteins or drinking carbonated drinks causes the body fluids to be acidic.  Acid causes tissues to burn and become less effective.  The kidney is very susceptible to high levels of acid and is one of the main organs to buffer the system when too much acid exists.  Acidity also leaches minerals out of the bones.  The increase of bony minerals in the blood allows kidney stones to form.  Kidney stones are very painful and cause trauma when they pass.

Poor Evacuation of the Bladder – Many people are so busy that they hold their urine longer than they should.  This causes the bladder to enlarge and many times when the person goes to the bathroom, they are unable to totally evacuate the bladder of urine.  This can lead to chronic bladder infections and a possible backup of urine into the kidneys.

Chronic Layers of Infection in the Bladder – Females have an increased chance for bladder and kidney infection due to the proximity of the urethra to the other anatomical parts of the elimination system.  Sexual intercourse and wiping after urination are also factors in the cause of bladder infections.  Females should always urinate after intercourse, and always wipe from front to back after urinating.

Treatment and Maintenance of the Urinary System:

1)    Drink one-half of your body weight in ounces of water per day.
2)    Do not drink soda pop as it causes major stress on the kidneys.
3)    Eat foods that help the body to be alkaline such as vegetables and fruit.
4)    Respond to your body’s natural urges for elimination and allow the flow to occur naturally instead of forcing the flow.
5)    Females should always urinate after sexual intercourse and should always wipe from front to back.

All About Gallstones

Gallstones

The gallbladder is the storage tank for bile which is the fluid that helps digest fats in the diet.  The gallbladder stores about two ounces of bile.  Fat receptors in the stomach and small intestines signal the body that a fatty meal has been consumed.  The gallbladder constricts and pumps bile into the small intestine where the fatty meal is acted upon by the bile.  The bile breaks down the fat into smaller particles to be more easily absorbed into the body for the creation of cells, hormones, lubrication etc.  The bile also helps to neutralize acids in the partially digested foods.

Modern medicine has yet to definitely show what causes gall stone formation but several theories exist:

1)    Too much cholesterol in the diet.  Since the most common type of stone is the cholesterol stone, scientists speculate that too much cholesterol and maldigestion of cholesterol may be the cause of cholesterol stones.  For individuals over age 30, a digestive enzyme taken with each meal is recommended to assist in the digestion of fats and cholesterol, thus reducing the chances for gall stone development.

2)    Parasitic infestation of the liver.  This theory suggests that gallstones are formed when the liver is malfunctioning.  The liver is the main filter and detoxifier of the body.  Any blood-born parasite or even intestinal flukes can pass through the liver but many times become lodged in the liver instead.  This action causes the liver to function abnormally and not be able to conjugate the bile appropriately in the gallbladder.  The abnormal bile sits in the gallbladder and becomes hardened, forming stones.

3)    Family or genetic tendencies.  Many times a whole family will have gallstone problems.  There may be genetic issues passed in the genes that cause liver malfunction.  There also may be a tendency towards gallstones among females who are over forty, over-weight, and are still able to bear children.

The treatment for gallstones is to support the liver with targeted supplementation, remove any layers of infection such as parasites, bacteria, fungus, etc, and to undergo a liver / gallbladder flush every six months.  Maintaining appropriate liver function is vital to overall health.

All About the Female System – PMS and Menopause

Female System – PMS and Menopause

The female system undergoes an amazing and intricate set of changes in hormone levels all the way from the beginning of menses, to menopause.  These hormonal fluctuations are the reason women are able to bear children.

Puberty – This is the beginning of the process when the female body begins to have surges of estrogen at the beginning of the cycle, and progesterone at the ending of the cycle.  The fluctuations in these two hormones are what cause the menstrual cycle.  Puberty begins around the age of 12.  Normal changes in the female body include breast, hip and chest enlargement, resulting in the “hour glass” shape; menses begins; and there is usually a growth spurt.

PMS – Pre-Menstrual Syndrome is a set of symptoms that can cause the normal cycle to be very uncomfortable.  There are many causes of PMS, but the main factor is that estrogen levels are too high at the end of the cycle when normal levels would be relatively low.  These elevated estrogen levels are often a result of abnormal function of the pituitary and/or too much estrogen in the diet from chicken, beef, and animal husbandry.  Junk food and an over abundance of simple carbohydrates can also cause PMS since these factors create an overall inflammatory state in the body.  If the system is already over-inflamed during the month there is not much room for more inflammation during the normal menstrual cycle.

Treatment of PMS – There are three primary ways to treat PMS:
1)    Diminish the amount of simple carbohydrates in the diet helping to decrease the over-all inflammation in the body.
2)    Decrease the amount of conventionally grown beef, and chicken in the diet.  Choose free-range or products grown without added hormones in the food.  This will decrease the abnormal levels of estrogen.
3)    Support the system with natural supplementation such as Fem-Affirm and PMSync, two supplements that support the cycle before, during, and after menses.

Menopause – This is the cessation of the normal female cycle.  This usually occurs around the age of 45 to 55 years old.  The condition may include hot flashes, mood swings, vaginal dryness, a marked decrease in estrogen, and bone loss or osteoporosis.  For many women this is a very difficult time as these symptoms can become quite severe.

Treatment of Menopause – Primary treatment protocol for menopause is to support the normal life functions.
1)    Eat right, including decreasing simple carbohydrates and increasing fruits and vegetables.
2)    Get plenty of rest and support the system with supplementation such as Fem-Affirm, Hormone Combination, Female Balance and Meno-Fem.
3)    Estrogen Replacement Therapy is not recommended as research indicates the decrease in estrogen is a normal process.
4)    Progesterone should be supplemented as this is the hormone needed more at this time of life.
5)    Increase mineral supplementation to help counteract osteoporosis.

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Chronic Fatigue Syndrome has been a misunderstood set of symptoms for years and people with these symptoms have been misunderstood as well.  People who have Chronic Fatigue Syndrome many times are thought of as “it’s all in your head” or told “just get over it”.  CFS is very real but what makes it difficult to treat is that there are many causes.

CFS usually has two major components, Endocrine Fatigue and Leaky Gut Syndrome.  Endocrine fatigue means the adrenal and thyroid glands are run down.  This is caused by overload and stress.  The adrenal gland produces adrenalin during stressful situations.  As we add more and more stress to our lives, the adrenal gland begins to produce less adrenalin due to the high demand.  The thyroid gland also begins to run down and the overall metabolism diminishes.  Research suggests 90% of the population has a low functioning thyroid.

Leaky Gut Syndrome plays a major part in CFS as well due to the increased toxin and infection load.  As the gut or digestive system looses its integrity due to overuse of antibiotics, poor food choices, chemicals, etc., more toxins and infections are able to enter the body.  Infections such as viruses, bacteria, fungus, and parasites trans-locate across the gut barrier and move around in the body.  As these infections move, they may infest vital organs such as the liver.  These infection layers build up in the body similar to the layers of an onion.  Traditional lab work doesn’t always pick up these infectious layers.

An overload of toxins in the system is another important cause of CFS and is most prominently noticed as water retention, or a “swampy” condition.  This swampy condition is the caused by lymphatic system blockage, resulting in the tissue and joint pain associated with CFS.

The recommended treatment for CFS is to:

1)    Support the adrenal and thyroid glands to increase energy and metabolism.
2)    Treat the Leaky Gut Syndrome by treating possible layers of infection in the digestive system and rebuilding the integrity of the colon.
3)    Detoxify the lymphatic system which will support the immune system.

Blood and Its Function

Blood is the pulse of life and the fluid that makes it all happen.  Blood is so significant that it is seen in our language with verbiage such as blood sacrifice, blood brothers, blood relatives etc.  Without blood, life ceases to exist.

Blood Makeup:

Red Blood Cells – Red blood cells are the oxygen carriers of the blood, containing hemoglobin which is the oxygen transport system.  Hemoglobin contains iron, a necessary ingredient in the capacity of hemoglobin to be able to carry oxygen.  If iron is low in the blood, anemia occurs and the ability of blood to carry oxygen is diminished.

White Blood Cells – White blood cells are the infection fighters or soldiers of the blood.  They are found in the blood and lymphatic fluid and have the ability to determine what is friend or foe.  As white blood cells come in contact with substances that should not be in the blood, such as bacteria, foreign proteins, etc, the white blood cells bring the foreign particle inside the cell and digest it with enzymes.  There are about six different types of white blood cells.

Platelets – Platelets are the major contributor to blood clotting at a normal rate.  Platelets come together forming a clot anytime there is body trauma or injury.  When there are insufficient platelets in the blood a bleeding disorder occurs called Hemophilia.  When too many platelets are present, excess clotting occurs which may lead to a stroke or other vascular issues.

Protein, Carbohydrates, and Fats – These three types of substances are the basic nutrients of the blood.  They are absorbed into the blood via the digestive system and once in the blood, they travel around supporting the basic cell function finally exiting the body through the lymphatic and eliminatory systems.

Plasma – Plasma is the clear fluid of the blood.  It gives the blood volume and the ability to carry all of the necessary nutrients to the cells as discussed above.  Once this clear fluid exits out of the blood system, it known as lymphatic fluid.

Enzymes – Enzymes are the particles in the blood that help digest nutrients.  Digestive enzymes are produced in the saliva, stomach, small intestine, and large intestine.  When we take digestive enzymes on an empty stomach, they help to digest particles in the blood that should not be there such as extra cholesterol, plaque, proteins and fats.  Having enough digestive enzymes in the blood is vital to maintaining healthy blood.  Foods such as fruits and vegetables are a major contributing factor in maintaining appropriate levels of these enzymes.
