The Fourth Law of Health – Rest

Are you getting at least eight hours of rest per night?  Many of us woefully lack in this department.  You need at least eight hours in bed in order to have enough time to get each type of rest you need.  You may have heard of REM sleep or rapid eye movement sleep.  This is the most important type of restful sleep and happens for about five of the total eight hours you are in your bed.

Normally it takes about one and a half hours in the beginning of the night to drop into REM sleep.   You are in REM for about five hours and the last hour and one-half you are coming out of deep sleep.

If you are not getting at least eight hours in your bed at night, you are costing yourself the ability to repair your body.  REM sleep is the time when your body totally relaxes from the stress of the day and the body uses energy resources to repair.

Being consistent about when you sleep is also important as this will help with your circadian rhythm, or the natural ebb and flow of life.  This rhythm allows you to have more energy in the morning and throughout the day.  And naturally, the energy frequency will drop so by the evening time you are ready to drop into your sleep pattern.

What type of bed you sleep on is very important.  We recommend the My Comfort Bed and have a sample in our office.  This bed has a special gel material just under the sleeping surface that allows your hips and shoulders to sink into the gel allowing pressure relief, while supporting your low back and neck, offering support and pressure relief — all in the same mattress.

Proper rest is vital to good health.  Allowing your body to de-stress during sleep so it can repair will add health and happiness to your life.

Most of us don’t like to exercise.  It takes time out of our busy schedules, it hurts, and many times we are just out and out too lazy to do it.  I know that is how I have felt in the past.  Exercise is one of the most important things we can do to keep our bodies healthy and whole.  It only takes 20 minutes per day to keep the juices flowing.  The oriental concepts of health and longevity are to keep things moving.  Tai Chi is a great example of a fluid movement exercise.

If you are starting an exercise program, I suggest at least 10 minutes of cardiovascular exercise each day.  This can be accomplished with any exercise machine such as a stationary bike, tread mill, stair stepper etc.  Even jogging in place is sufficient to raise your pulse to a target rate.  Take the next ten minutes and work your upper body with resistance exercise such as weights or resistance cords.  Work your upper body one day, and the lower body the next.  Alternate these exercises every other day.  Take Sunday off for a day of rest.

As you move and exercise each day, you will strengthen your muscles, bones, connective tissue, and move your lymphatic fluid will have a better flow.  This will add years to your life.  If you would like to have some help with creation of an effective exercise program, feel free to contact the office and we can help set you up.  Here’s to you your health.

Are You Hungry?

Are You Hungry?

Are you hungry for food and the life it brings?  I just love food and the joy it brings, especially during the summer months with all of the family parties and social events. Sometimes I just lay there with my stomach so full I can hardly move or roll over.  That’s the problem!!  If I can’t move, how can I exercise? Exercise?!??!  I think I’ll just lie here a little longer and have another piece of blueberry cream cheese pie.  Does this sound familiar?  It does to me some days.

We can attend all of the wonderful parties and enjoy all of the foods, just don’t eat until you are stuffed.  When we eat to excess, we get the washing machine effect in our stomachs.  You know, when you overload your washing machine and the soap just sits on top of the clothes and doesn’t mix in with the water?  This is what happens when we overload our stomachs.  The digestive enzymes don’t mix well with the food, and improper digestion occurs.  Here are some helpful hints with eating.
1) Try to eat your proteins such as meats with vegetables.  Vegetables are a neutral food and can be eaten with both high starch and high proteins.
2) Eat high starch foods such as bread and rice with vegetables.  Again, vegetables can be digested well with either starch or protein.
3) Eat fruits alone as a meal or between meals as a snack.  Fruits are digested quickly and if you place them in the same meal with proteins, the fruit will ferment as protein takes a longer time to digest.
4) Eat a diet consisting of 50% vegetables, 20% fruits, 20% proteins, and 10% fats. Remember to not eat the fruit with meals.
5) Water is best sipped during a meal rather than drinking a lot of water.  If you drink a lot of water with the meal, the digestive enzymes are diluted and it is harder to have appropriate digestion.
6) Eat dessert first as life is too short!!!  No, eat dessert, but just a little and later on after the meal. You can add almonds or nuts, to slow down the “jet fuel” effect of the sugar. Make desserts that involve better choices for the sugar.
Follow these ideas, and you will have a much better digestion, and you will still be able to eat and have fun at those family parties.  Here’s to your health!  For more information, call the office at 801-298-4646.

Are You Hot ?!

This year of 2007 has been a very interesting weather year. We are about one month ahead of the normal weather pattern. The snow pack melted a month ahead of normal, the heat of July was here in June, and the fire tankers have been flying overhead sooner than normal. With all this heat it is very important to make sure you are drinking enough water. I recommend you drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day. That means if you weigh 160 lbs. you would drink 80 ounces per day. Remember you are sweating much more and loosing much more fluid than you do in the colder months. You are also losing more minerals in your sweat. With the loss of minerals, heat stroke is much more likely. We gain our minerals from fruit and vegetables, mostly from green leafy vegetables, so eat lots of salads. Another source of minerals is from one of our suppliers called BioNativus. They harvest wonderful minerals from the Great Salt Lake. This awesome body of water holds many keys to health. The Great Salt Lake receives its water from 35,000 square miles of the most mineral rich dense land in the world. All 72 minerals and noble gasses are found in this water. What’s interesting is that these minerals are highly electrically charged due to being hit by lightening from the electrical storms of the summer. This charge helps with the absorption of the minerals into your cells.Don’t dry up and blow away this summer!! Stay well hydrated and add minerals to your water. Stop by the office and pick up a bottle of minerals to add to your water. The minerals come in a straight liquid, or they can be added to the water with a tasty concentrate. If you have any questions, call the office and one of the staff can answer any questions you might have. To your Health!!Doctor Giles

Leaky Gut Syndrome – Part 2

What Causes Leaky Gut?

There are many factors in the American diet and lifestyle that contribute to Leaky Gut Syndrome. A review of the causes of leaky gut will reveal why this condition is a pandemic in the modern world.

  1. Overuse of antibiotics. Antibiotics, unfortunately kill both the good and bad bacteria. The friendly flora in the intestine becomes depleted.
  2. Poor diet. The Standard American diet of fast foods and processed foods is lacking in important vitamins, minerals and enzymes.
  3. High carbohydrate diet and eating too close to bedtime. This provides food for the fungal and yeast overgrowth.
  4. Infestation of offending organisms. The intestinal lining is weakened by the
presence of bacteria, virus, fungal over-growth, parasites, and heavy metals.
  5. Chronic stress.
  6. Normal immune response to foreign proteins. This leads to an increased inflammatory response.
  7. Environmental contaminants.
  8. Excess alcohol.
  9. NSAIDS and other medications, including birth control pills.

Leaky Gut and the Disease Process

Leaky Gut contributes to several diseases through the following pathways:

  1. Antibiotic therapy and poor diet kill friendly bacteria which leaves the intestinal mucosa vulnerable to offending organisms.
  2. These organisms may cause the bowel to become inflamed which causes a loss of absorption and nutrient deficiencies to occur.
  3. Inflammation causes the intestinal mucosa to become hyperpermeable allowing larger undigested proteins to enter the blood stream. These foreign proteins cause food allergies to occur.
  4. As the friendly bacteria are killed and the bowel becomes enflamed, the protective antibodies are affected allowing foreign invaders such as yeast, parasites, bacteria, etc. to easily move through the gut lining into the body and affect any organ system.
  5. Antibodies form to fight the foreign proteins that have leaked into the body. As they search for these foreign proteins, they may attack similar proteins in the body such as organ tissue and autoimmune diseases may occur.
  6. As large undigested proteins move throughout the blood supply, they may become lodged in the lymphatic system causing an abnormal flow of lymph and symptoms such as Fibromyalgia to occur.

Many health problems can arise when larger food particles and toxins enter the blood streams.

These include:
• Autoimmune disease
• Celiac disease
• Crohns disease
• Environmental illness
• Hives
• Acne
• Allergies
• Inflammatory joint disease/arthritis
• Intestinal infections
• Pancreatic insufficiency
• Ulcerative colitis
• Giardia
• Chronic Fatigue syndrome
• Eczema
• Psoriasis
• Food allergies and sensitivities
• Liver dysfunction
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Irritable bowel syndrome

Leaky Gut Syndrome – Part 4

Foundation for Health Food Plan

A basic diet of vegetables, fruits and whole grains provides a foundation that can be applied to any health condition. It promotes healing and offers good balanced nutrition.

The following guidelines can be used for food selection:

1) Emphasis on natural, whole foods from the plant kingdom. These foods promote health by providing:

  • Plant proteins
  • Vegetables that give vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and fiber
  • Essential fatty acids
  • Herbs and spices for seasonings and therapies.

These foods should be included in every meal.

2) Natural organic fruits. Enjoy the fruits of the season in bundance. They provide many vitamins, minerals and enzymes. They make an excellent snack or light meal to be eaten in the afternoon or early evening.

3) Whole grains provide fiber, B vitamins, minerals, and carbohydrates and will support and give energy to the body. These are best eaten in
the afternoon or evening.

4) Animal proteins are to be used sparingly. Emphasis should be given to fish, chicken, eggs, cottage cheese and yogurt. Red meats are a high stress food and should be eaten no more than once a week.

5) Food combining to optimize digestion. The CWS Five Lifestyle Classes teach how to combine foods in meal plans. Proteins and carbohydrates should not be eaten at the same time. We recommend eating
various types of vegetables and proteins in the same meal.

6) Proteins should be consumed early in the day. A high protein
breakfast provides great fuel for the body before a long days work. Lunch can be either a protein meal or a complex carbohydrate meal to sustain energy through the rest of the day.

7) Light foods are recommended in the early evening hours and include complex carbohydrates, vegetables and fruits.

8) Avoid late night eating
(after 6:00 pm)

Foods to Emphasize

  • Fresh fruits (chronic cases of candida may need to avoid during first few
    weeks of therapy)
  • Vegetables (Raw or steamed)
  • Whole grains in moderation
  • Dark green leafy vegetables provide sulfur which promotes healing
  • Sprouts provide oxygen and Vitamin K and promotes healing
  • Fresh carrot and spinach juice
  • Vegetable and green drinks
  • 1-2 TB ground flax seeds daily
  • Unsweetened yogurt daily
  • Soaked Nuts and Seeds (soaked overnight in pineapple juice)
  • Fish, poultry, yard eggs
  • Freshly prepared soups (without milk or cream)
  • Chlorophyll products

Support detoxification with: garlic, onions, chlorella, spirulina, and wheatgrass

Anti-fungal foods include: garlic , onion, broccoli, cabbage, kale, brussel sprouts, olive and flax oils, cinnamon and clove

Foods to Avoid for fungal or yeast overgrowth:

  • Sugar and yeast products. All forms of simple sugar.
  • Foods with mold (aged cheese, nuts, nut butters)
  • Refined foods and hidden sugar
  • Fruits and fruit juices during the first month of treatment
  • Dairy and dairy based products
  • Partially hydrogenated oils
  • Potato chips and other fried foods
  • Fruit juices—canned or frozen
  • Apple cider vinegar and other fermented products
  • Peanuts and peanut butter
  • Processed meats, bacon , sausage and corned beef

Asthma

Do you have Asthma or do you know anyone who does? This is a condition that affects thousands of Americans each year. This is a very scary condition for anyone who has it. The symptoms can manifest at any time and are triggered by many different causes.

Common daytime symptoms

  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Tightness in your chest
  • Shortness of breath

images.jpg
Common nighttime symptoms

  • Trouble falling asleep because of coughing, wheezing, or tightness in your chest
  • Waking up in the night with a cough, wheeze, or tightness in your chest
  • Waking up too early in the morning with a cough or tightness in your chest
  • Waking up to use your rescue inhaler

lungs-3.jpg
Many people feel their symptoms are under control because they use a rescue breather or are taking an asthma medication. This is only covering up the cause.

What is the cause of Asthma
When you have symptoms of asthma, your air ways are very sensitive and are chronically inflamed. This inflammation can be caused from layers of infection in the lungs and bronchi, from food and airborne allergens, and from leaky gut syndrome. These conditions cause the airways to narrow and become blocked with an increased production of mucus.

What is an Asthma attack
An attack is when the symptoms worsen and the patient feels like they are sipping from a drinking straw and someone has pinched the middle of the straw. In acute cases, emergency inhalers are suggested. During an attack, patients feel they cannot get enough air into their lungs.
Actually they are able to get air in, but cannot get it out as well. Attacks are often seen in the middle of the night between 2 and 6 a.m. This is when your body is in its filtration cycle and is trying to cleanse. The liver is usually overloaded and will shunt toxins to any area of the body that can help with the toxic load. The lungs are one of the largest detoxifying organs of the body. The increased toxic load will cause inflammation and an increased mucus production which leads to tightness in the chest, wheezing, and difficulty breathing.

Treatment
At the Family Wellness Center, we focus on the cause of the problem by treating the leaky gut syndrome found with most asthmatics, the possible layers of infection in the lungs and bronchi, and by alleviating various food and airborne allergies. We also focus on repair and support of the lungs, colon, liver, adrenals, and any other organ that may be affecting the patient and leading to the Asthmatic symptoms. We must remember that symptoms are only the smoke of the fire. Treating the symptoms is very important, but we need to put the fire out before the smoke goes away. Focusing on the cause of the symptoms and not on the symptoms alone leads to a long term cure for the patient.
